SummerDaze: The Series : The Interview
I have been fangirling over SummerDaze for several weeks now. I have been actively checking the indiegogo crowdfunding to see how much has close they are to their goal. (If you want to donate, please click here!) I have also been following all their socials, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok. Yes, all of them!
If you have no clue what I am talking about, allow me to introduce you to Singapore’s first BL drama. I decided to shoot my shot and ask if I could interview the producers to help promote this amazing project and discuss what we can expect from the series. So, without further ado here is the interview!
K.F.C: You filmed the short movie in 2018 but in 2020 it rose back to popularity thanks to the internet. After you saw it soar back into popularity and fans begged for it to become a series, how long did it take you to make the decision to give the fans what they wanted? What was your reaction to the demand for the series?
How long did it take to respond: It took us quite a long time to respond to the fans because we didn’t want to compromise on the quality of the production.
Our reaction: It was exciting but there’s also that pressure of expanding the story without taking away from the beauty of the short film. We are very moved by the comments, especially for those who could relate to the characters. And we are thankful to all the support and love.
K.F.C: The short film was filmed on 제주도in South Korea, was there any significance to the location? And will we be seeing it again in the series?
We chose the beautiful 제주도as the location for the short film because the short film was a fashion film made for the Singaporean menswear label The Authority. Yes, we have written the script to include scenes from 제주도as the series revolves around how the two actors ended up filming the short film we saw 3 years ago. (A film in a film.)
K.F.C: What was the process for expanding the story for the series? How did you choose for it to be between two actors versus two friends or any of the other kinds of tropes we see in BL?
Because the short film didn’t have any dialogue or names, many viewers were able to relate to it or interpret the story in their own meaningful ways. We didn’t want to take away from their experience by extending the original story or throwing in a plot twist for the sake of it. The producers sat down to discuss this in 2020 and decided that the short film should just be a film within the new series.
K.F.C: How did you go about picking your two main leads? What about them was different from the others?
David got the role through a traditional casting process while Alfred was the last person who came for the auditions. Originally, they were supposed to play each other’s characters but after seeing their chemistry onscreen, we decided to swap their roles.
K.F.C: What do you want fans to know most about the series? What can we expect from it?
We hope they get lots of butterflies in their tummies.
We want to thank the producers for taking time out of their busy schedules to sit down and answer all the questions we had for them. And if you want to help them make this dream come true, please donate to their crowdfunding here. There is still time! If you are unable to donate, please share to all your friends and family who are massive BL fans like us!
